OHTO Rook

Portability perfected.

OHTO RookI was recently on JetPens.com looking for a better way to travel with my art supplies when I came across this cool little orange pen. What struck me first was the design – the OHTO Rook has a clean anodized aluminum body with orange accent rings – very sleek. What I realized after checking the specs was how small it was – capped the pen is only 3.75″ (9.4cm) while posted it increases to a much more useable 5.6″ (14.2cm). It is extremely light – weighing in at only half an ounce inked. The Rook takes standard international short cartridges so you have a lot of ink choices at your disposal.

OHTO RookThe nib comes in a fine tip only and has a simple design with the words iridium point engraved on the nib. Writing seems similar in feel to my Metropolitan which is perfect for a pen in this range. The nib puts down a good ink flow and keeps up even when writing quickly with no skipping or hard starts. There is some flex in the nib and you can get a little line variation out of it as a result. The cap is push to post with “Rook” silkscreened opposite the clip. The clip is simple and functional with little pressure needed to open it. The body has a slight hourglass shape when capped giving it a nice overall look.

While this is not a pen I would write with for long periods of time in the office, it is the perfect pen to pack when you need to conserve weight and space but would like access to a fountain pen. It feels good in hand and posts firmly so you can put some pressure across the barrel. The grip is a bit slick but given where I think this pen shines the grip is not a huge issue. I am tossing this in my daypack when I go hiking to sketch with, or when I am out on a photo shoot. Other color options include Silver/Black, and Black/Green. It is also available in a ballpoint in the same colors plus Black/Red. To see all the options head over to JetPens.com.
